What ORB does
ORB marks the high and low of the first minutes after the open, five by default from 09:30 ET, and freezes them the moment the window ends.
From there it watches for one thing in each direction: the first bar that closes beyond the level. A triangle goes under the bar that closed above the OR high and over the bar that closed below the OR low, once each, and nothing more until tomorrow's open.
An optional ATR buffer or volume filter can make the close prove something before it counts, and an alert fires on the confirming bar's close.
Purpose
The opening range is one of the oldest reference points in day trading, and one of the easiest to mark inconsistently: a wick through the high, a close that barely got there, a second push the next hour. ORB applies one plain rule the same way every session, so the box and the break are never a judgment call.
It gives you a consistent way to:
- See the opening range drawn and frozen the instant the window ends
- Know at a glance whether price has closed outside it, and in which direction
- Ignore wicks and intrabar prints that came back
- Get one alert per direction per day, on the close that confirms it
Why choose it
- Close-basis, never repainted. A break is confirmed on the close of the bar that cleared the level, so the historical pass and the live pass mark the same bars.
- Once per direction. After the first close above the OR high, ORB stops looking up. A second push through the same level is not a second signal.
- Your clock, in Eastern Time. The open and the window length are set in ET, whatever time zone the platform uses. 15 and 30-minute ranges and the Globex open are one setting away.
- Filters that are off by default. Out of the box ORB is the plain rule. The ATR buffer and volume filter are there when you want them.
- Any market, any bars. Futures, micros, stocks and ETFs, on minute, tick, range or volume charts.
- Light on your platform. It reads standard bars. No Order Flow+, no Level 2 and no Tick Replay needed.
The rule
A break is a bar that closes beyond the level: not a touch, not a wick, not an intrabar print that came back. Each direction fires once per day, and breaks are only looked for between the end of the window and a cut-off you set, 16:00 ET by default, so an overnight drift through yesterday's range is not a break of it.
09:30 ET
The window opens. The band appears and the developing high and low draw dimmed.
09:35
The window ends. The box and the levels go solid and never move again.
First close out
A triangle under or over the bar that closed beyond the level. That side is done for the day.
16:00 ET
The cut-off. No further breaks are looked for. The box stays on the chart.
Key capabilities
- The opening range on your clock: open and window length in Eastern Time, frozen when the window ends
- Close-basis breaks, once per direction per day, inside a session window you set
- An optional ATR buffer and above-average volume filter for the break bar
- Three extension modes: to a clock time, to the next day's window, or across the window only
- Break alerts per direction, live bars only, with a sound picker
- Strategy Builder series: OrbHigh, OrbLow and BreakSignal (+1 up, −1 down, 0 otherwise)
- Full styling for the levels, the zone and the window band, and as many days of history as you want
- The unified FlowForged toolbar pill and the suite-wide Master Switch
How to set up ORB in NinjaTrader 8
- Open a chart whose bars are no longer than the range: a 1 to 5-minute chart for a 5-minute range, or tick, range or volume bars.
- Add FF ORB from the Indicators window and keep Calculate on bar close.
- Under Opening range, set the session open in ET (930 by default) and the range length (5 minutes).
- Under Break rule, add an ATR buffer or the volume filter if you want the close to prove something, and set the cut-off time.
- Under Alerts, turn alerts on and choose a sound. Then use the toolbar pill to switch levels, zone, window, marks, labels and history.

ORB FAQ
Does ORB need Order Flow+ or Tick Replay?
No. It reads standard bars: no Order Flow+, no Level 2 and no Tick Replay.
Does ORB repaint?
No. A break is confirmed on the close of the bar that cleared the level, so the historical pass and the live pass mark the same bars. It flags the first close beyond the range once per direction per day.
Which markets and charts does it work on?
Any instrument NinjaTrader charts, including futures, micros, stocks and ETFs, on minute, tick, range or volume charts. Bars must be no longer than the range: a 5-minute range wants a 1 to 5-minute chart.
Can I use ORB in Strategy Builder?
Yes. It exposes OrbHigh, OrbLow and BreakSignal, which reads +1 on an up break, −1 on a down break and 0 otherwise.

Conclusion
ORB is a rule, not a forecast. It marks the opening range and the first close that leaves it, the same way every session, so the structure of the open is on your chart without any judgment calls:
- The box, frozen the moment the window ends
- One mark per direction, on the close that confirms it
- An alert you can trust not to repeat

Futures trading involves substantial risk and is not for every investor. Chart examples show past market activity and are not indicative of future results. ORB is an analytical tool, not trading advice.
